How do I copy content between Brightspace modules?

These are the instructions for lecturers wishing to copy content across from one Brightspace module to another.

Answer

How to copy content between Brightspace modules

To begin with, you'll want to have the 'course offering code(s)' of the old module(s) to hand. This is how to find them:

  1. In the Brightspace module, select ‘Control Panel’ from the navbar

  2. Select ‘Course Offering Information’
  3. Copy ‘Course Offering Code’.

Once you've got those, you'll be ready to start copying things across. Here's how to do this:

  1. Once you're in the new module, choose 'Control Panel' from the navbar.
  2. In control panel, choose the 'Import/Export/Copy Components' tool.
  3. Keep the top option selected (Copy Components from another Org Unit) and click the button for 'Search for Offering'.
  4. In the popup window, paste the Course Offering Code of the module that you want to copy from and press the magnifying glass (or press enter).
  5. Select the right module from the resulting list, then select the 'Add Selected' button.
  6. Back in the original window, choose whether you want to 'Copy All Components' or if you'd like to 'Select Components'. In almost all cases, you shouldn't copy across assessments, as this will create work for the Course Admin team. Therefore, choose 'Select Components' and make sure that 'Assessments' is unchecked.
    • If you choose to copy all components, it will immediately begin importing all of the old material. It will take a minute or so to do that and then you will be able to view it.
    • If you choose to select individual components, you will see each Content tool in Brightspace as a checkbox. Ticking the box means that you can then choose whether to copy all of the things in that tool, or again to individually select which material you'd like to copy across. Keep the 'Include associated files' box checked to copy across things like images that were uploaded and linked to within the content. Clicking 'continue' will then enable you to choose or confirm exactly which things you want copied. When you're ready, select the 'Finish' button. It will take a minute or so to copy across the content and you can then view it.

  1. This is how you copy from one course to another, but it does not explain how WITHIN a single course you copy from one module to another. What if you want the same content in every module (every week) for a course? Do you have to create a new link, file, whatever, for every single week, or can you duplicate it somehow?

  2. Hi Ali, I can see that you work at a different institution. The confusion here will be that in our implementation of Brightspace, we refer to modules as 'folders'. This is because our courses, like most in the UK, are comprised of modules, so it would be misleading if our so-called folders also had that name. You are probably best asking questions on the Brightspace Community (https://community.brightspace.com/s/) if you need general help, rather than on the pages of specific institutions, whose guidance will be specific for their own implementation of Brightspace. In short though, there's not a super easy way to do what you're asking. It's generally quickest to copy the content within the file, then create a new file and copy it in.
